In order to fully benefit from a lesson on the volumes of spheres, cones and cylinders students need to know how to work in collaborative groups and to follow instructions precisely. Students would need to understand the concept of the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes (i.e. square vs. cube) and will have to have a full understanding of the area and perimeter of 2D shapes. Students will have to understand what the term volume means. Students should have learned properties of 2D shapes in 5th grade. Students should have obtained knowledge on perimeter, circumference and area in 6th grade but students will gain full comprehension and be introduced to volume in 7th grade.
